Our Commitment to Clean Water
At HigherRing, we believe that business can—and should—be a force for good. As part of our 1% for the Planet commitment, we're proud to support San Francisco Baykeeper, an organization dedicated to defending the Bay from pollution and advocating for clean water.
Through 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of our total revenue—not just profit—to environmental partners. While HigherRing supports several outstanding organizations, our contribution to San Francisco Baykeeper holds special meaning, as the Bay Area is our company's birthplace.
For over 30 years, SF Baykeeper has been on the front lines of environmental protection, safeguarding the San Francisco Bay's ecosystems, holding polluters accountable, and ensuring communities have access to clean water and healthy neighborhoods. Their mission to protect the Bay from corporate polluters and government wrongdoing aligns perfectly with our goal of supporting impact-driven organizations working toward a more sustainable world.
Currently, Baykeeper is fighting on multiple fronts to protect the Bay. They're leading a crucial legal battle to protect the white sturgeon, an ancient species that has inhabited the Bay's waters for over 100 million years, by challenging federal agencies' delayed protection decisions. They're also tackling pressing infrastructure challenges like preventing sewage spills during the Bay Area's increasingly intense rainy seasons.
Another critical focus is their ongoing work to combat fossil fuel pollution in the Bay. Through legal action and advocacy, Baykeeper has successfully pushed for stricter controls on oil refineries' toxic discharges, fought to prevent oil spills, and worked to phase out coal export facilities that threaten both the Bay's ecosystem and local communities. Since 1996, their persistent efforts have led to mandatory infrastructure upgrades across more than 20 Bay Area cities, resulting in significant reductions in various forms of pollution entering the Bay.
Why Baykeeper?
The San Francisco Bay is the heart of Northern California's environment, economy, and culture. Yet it faces ongoing threats from industrial pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. SF Baykeeper takes direct action by patrolling the Bay, investigating pollution, gathering evidence, and stopping polluters. They have a proven track record of supporting communities fighting for environmental health and advancing equity throughout the Bay Area.
